DHRU'S GRADUATION PARTY

(Saturday, June 28, 2003)

By Rohit

Dhru B. held his graduation party last week. The walls were well decorated with balloons and other signs that said "Congrats Grad" and most people were accordingly dressed for this momentous occasion. It is no wonder why there was such a big feast planned. The appetizers started with some Indian delights such as samosas among some mango punch or some sort. The dinner was so elaborate that it was hard to believe all of it was homemade! The dinner was excellent, not to mention. Dhru has been accepted and chose to attend MIT (he got into other well respected Universities as well). It will off to Boston for Dhru and this is his last summer with his family and friends, and he's making the most of it!

The party began in full swing as guests piled up after a beautiful 6 o'clock evening. But it was 6:20PM and there were small bunches of people widely scattered around the hall. Waiting for new guests, I decided to sit in the lobby outside the hall. I began reading a US News and World Report magazine as I could see the bustling in the kitchen down the hallway. Dhru was busy talking to some newely arrived guests and I didn't find it necessary to bother him, after all he's my neighbor. At around 6:30PM, the place still had a paucity of people. I was indulging myself in a weight-loss report (not that I'm heavily obese, but getting in shape is everyone' dream nowadays). Suddenly, people from "all walks of life" began pouring through the doors. I finally found a couple of friends and tagged along with them as we toured the appetizers line. The hall was divided among Dhru's friends, his family friends, distant relatives, teachers and his family members running between all of them.

Dhru and his family cutting the cake!

As we thought nothing was planned besides walking and eating did Dhru's brother announced the speeches. In all the we heard speeches from Mihir, Dhru, Mr. Eby, and Howard (they did lightened up the atmosphere). It was disturbing how short Mr. Eby had cut his hair (to give him a womanly appeal), but he just got a baby and I'm sure all the hair pulling did this. Mihir had a well prepared speech and fluently read it out loud. It moslty consisted of the regular stuff (We'll miss you...blah blah). Dhru's spoke a little about his thanks and frankly it closely resembled an Oscar speech (I thank my family, my lawyers, my teachers, etc.). Mr. Eby's speech included a heart-felt, "We're going to miss such a brilliant student." Howard's speech was a joke, well it wasn't funny, but was meant to be a joke. After the end of speeches, the cake was cut and dinner was served. I forgot what order that went in, either the cake was cut and THEN dinner was served or it was vice versa. Doesn't really matter, this is not New York Times...its Daily Herald.

Throughout the party, Dhru was busy signing autographs, talking to friends, and acknowledging family. The feast was amazingly prepared and it was well worth the fuel we spent to get to the place (approx. 30 minutes away). We hope Drhu succeeds in the future and we see him in the New York Times instead of here, but he's been a great contribution to a large circle of friend and a smaller one that started almost four years ago. We wish him luck in his "new" life in Boston and hope he visits this old school town again. Thanks Dhru!
